Turquoise

Chinese Name

-

The Origin

The name Turquoise is derived from the French 'pierre turquoise' meaning 'Turkish stone'. This is because the trade routes through which Turquoise reached Europe from the mines in Central Asia went through Turkey.

Ancient Use

Turquoise was one of the first gemstones to be mined and may be the longest-used of all gemstones. Turquoise beads dating back to 5000BC have been found in Mesopotamia, now called Iraq and the Egyptians mined Turquoise in the Sinai Peninsula in 3200BC. In ancient Persia, now known as Iran, it was believed that good luck would fall on someone who saw the reflection of a New Moon on a turquoise. It was also known to have the ability to warn the wearer of impending danger or illnesses.

Metaphysics Properties

Turquoise comes in different shades of green and blue and is known for its healing properties, providing comfort for the spirit and well-being for the body. It enhances intuition, assists creative problem-solving and promotes calm and tranquility. Tibetan Turquoise, which is green, has the added benefit of healing throat chakra blockages.
